Too many of us are out of habit when it comes to drinking enough water during the day. While we may not need 8 glasses, drinking water (plain or flavoured) is ESSENTIAL for your health.

Here are 5 Science-Based Health Benefits of drinking enough WATER

1. Hydration has a major effect on ENERGY levels and BRAIN function

Studies have shown that even mild dehydration can impair some aspects of brain function. In a study of a young woman, fluid loss of 1.36% after exercise impaired both mood, concentration, and increased the frequency of headaches.

2. Your DIGESTIVE SYSTEM depends on it

The bowel needs water to work properly. Dehydration can lead to digestive issues, constipation, and an overly acidic stomach. This in turn increases the likelihood of developing heartburn and stomach ulcers.

3. WEIGHT LOSS

Water can increase satiety and boost your metabolic rate. Two studies have shown that drinking 500ml of water increased metabolism by 24-30% for up to 1.5hrs! A note to all those who need to attend all day meetings – BRING YOUR WATER WITH YOU!
TIMING is very important. Drinking half an hour BEFORE meals is the most effective.

4. Maximise PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE

Particularly important during intense exercise or high heat. It is not uncommon for athletes to lose up to 6-10% of their water weight via sweat. This can alter your body temperature, increase fatigue and reduce motivation. Optimal hydration has been shown to prevent these symptoms and may even reduce the oxidative stress that occurs during high intensity exercise. Not surprising, as muscles are approximately 80% water!

5. Maintaining KIDNEY HEALTH

The kidneys regulate fluid in the body – they cleanse the body of toxins as long as your intake of fluid is adequate. If you chronically drink too little, you may be at higher risk for kidney stones, especially in warm climates. Higher fluid intake increases the volume of urine passing through the kidneys, which dilutes the concentration of minerals, so they are less likely to crystallize and form clumps (or stones).

Think of water as a nutrient for your body. Keep hydrated, and keep healthy!
